about

" Gamelan Suite: For Darius and Madeline" was composed in 1994 while I was an MFA student at Mills College Center for Contemporary Music. The title refers to the Mills Gamelan, built by Lou Harrison and Bill Colvig, and named in honor of Darius Milhaud and Madeline Milhaud.

The suite starts in the 5-note Slendro tuning for the first two pieces, Lancaran Laying Rail, and Gending Sigh of Longing, then moves to Pelog (a 7-note tuning) in the third piece, Ladrang Laura. In the fourth piece, Sirep Mysterious Clouds, it moves from Pelog, through a section using both Pelog and Slendro simultaneously, to Slendro. The fifth piece, Bubaran Daniel, is in Slendro.

About the tuning of the gamelan - From Balungan Magazine:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Mills Gamelan is tuned in just intonation:

Slendro:
(5)8/7(6)7/6(1)9/8(2)8/7(3)7/6/(5)

Pelog:
(1)13/12(2)14/13(3)17/14(4)18/17(5)19/18(6)21/19(7)8/7(1)

Pitch (6) is the same in slendro and pelog, called the "tumbuk" or shared tone. Pitch (5) of pelog is A=440 Hz.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

This album is dedicated to Laura McColm and Daniel Kelley, without whose help the performance would have been a shadow of what it was.
Laura put great effort and time into creating the pesinden (female vocalist) parts for this piece and therefor deserves composing credit, and Daniel Kelley's precise and sensitive drumming kept a group that contained many beginning gamelan players together through some difficult passages.
