The Quintet with Interruption (Two Lines), is a structured improvisation interrupted (briefly) by a second structured improvisation.

The Quintet proper involves five players (shakuhachi, clarinet, oboe, violin, and trumpet) in a strategy that proceeds from imitation, into ornamentation, through continuous variation, into oppositional variation (interruption), and finally moving to a process of mutual interdependence and independence before coming to a close.

The Quintet is interrupted in mid-stream, and in an oppositional fashion, by a tightly focused, violent duet for bass clarinet and piano. You can hear the footsteps of the two players in the duet entering and leaving the stage in this recording. The violent duet fragments and disturbs the lyrical world of the Quintet, somewhat like a large rock being hurled into a pond. The Quintet, in a way reminiscent of slowly moving water, absorbs and transforms these energies, becoming briefly turbulent before returning to its flow.
