about

David Gibson, cello, in a live performance at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, on March 3, 1999, of Joel G. Taylor's Glacial Spring for Cello and Tape. The cello part to this work is a structured improvisation, the score consisting of melodic fragments, melodic constraints, and verbal instructions for the performer. The tape part was realized by Joel G. Taylor at RPI's iEAR Studios in 1999, and at Mills College Center for Contemporary Music during 1994. Tildy Bayar recorded portions of the tape that was realized at CCM.
The first section of the tape is constructed by subjecting recordings of cello and "slack cello" to standard tape manipulations such as transposing down in pitch and speed, splicing, multi-tracking, reversing and so forth. The 2nd section of the tape is a sound constructed by multi-tracking the harmonics of a 1.8 shakuhachi and transposing them down several octaves. The 3rd section of the tape is constructed by multi-tracking a variety of Indonesian percussion instruments and homemade percussion instruments.
The piece is a straightforward example of "sound painting." The title says what needs to be said about the subject. The work should stand on its own as an abstraction without reference to this initiating impulse.

lyrics

Glacial Spring.
Ice, Wind.
The distant sun.
The waters run wild.
