about

Irama Feldman, a Quartet for Harpsichord, Marimba, and Two Vibraphones, is a polytempic, polymicrotonal work created with Max, Pianoteq, and Reaper software.

The harpsichord and marimba simulations are both tuned to a Pelog/Slendro tuning, and the two vibraphone simulations are tuned to Wendy Carlos' Alpha and Beta non-octave repeating tunings. Alpha divides a perfect fifth (3/2) into 9 equal tones, and Beta divides a perfect fifth (3/2) into 11 equal tones.

The "Irama" in the title refers to Javanese Gamelan practice of playing in different tempos, where each tempo has its own associated performance rules.

The slow, deliberate flow of this work would certainly not have been possible for me to arrive at without listening to Morton Feldman's beautiful, repetitive, and timeless music.
