This track is a first reaction to hearing that my dear friend and fellow musician, Roberto DeHavens, had died of prostate cancer. Roberto was an amazing multi-instrumentalist/composer, whose sound, on the Tenor Saxophone, was unforgettable. Deeply influenced by John Coltrane's work, Roberto developed a deeply energetic and exploratory approach to all of his instruments and to composition. He was a loyal supporter of my music when I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s, always willing to volunteer to take on the most esoteric and difficult roles that I was capable of imagining for him. In addition to saxophones, he played clarinet, trap-set, and keyed percussion (marimba/xylophone/vibraphone).
This track seeks to evoke both the anxiety and disbelief that the news of Roberto's death caused me, the dawning of the realization that he had indeed died, and the memory of his approach to the horn as an instrument of transcendental power and grace.
