Quadracity 1 for Daniel Stearns expresses my admiration for this truly original American composer's music. It explores the simultaneous sounding of self-unified, polytemporal, polytextural sound streams. Four pianos play the four parts to "For Daniel Stearns," a work for 22-EDO piano, simultaneously. Those four complex sound streams are, more often than not, transformed by digital signal processing into streams of continuous sounds, that sometimes evoke images of instrumental, or vocal choirs. Underneath these textures, some of the piano parts are almost always visible, surfacing in waves of soloing activity.

Quadricity 1 is for four pianos and computer signal processing using real-time granular time-stretching techniques. This piece is tuned in 22 EDO (equal divisions of the octave), and makes extensive use of Paul Erlich's Decaphonic scale, a symmetrical 10 note scale that is the tonal ground upon which more extended explorations into the wilds of 22 EDO are launched.
